The NET

This morning Hedgewizard posted a bit about his Internet frustrations. Made me laugh in a commiserating sort of way. I must admit to a some what adversarial relationship with computer technology in general and with the Net in specific. It has completely invaded my life. The community I've found in the Blogospere is an important means of sharing ideas, stories, and staying connected to other sane (or equally crazy) people around the would. I can't imagine another way it could be done. At Roberts' Roost we use it for all sorts of things, like banking, bill paying, and information gathering. The kids attend an online school (which they love). I'm even on the cusp of publishing my first e-booklet (A guide to managed grazing for the micro farm). So, I use the Net a lot, but I don't get along with it very well.

In my world computers are the new habitat for the old Greek and Roman gods. They are very powerful and extremely capricious, and you never know when their mood will change and they will unleash havoc on your would. The Net, on the other hand, is the place I keep hoping to find JANE. (You can meet JANE in Speaker For The Dead, Orson Scott Card's second book in the Ender series. Of course you need to read Ender's Game first and then finish the series, but it's well worth it.) Usually I find the pixies from Charles de Lint's book, Spirits in the Wires. Not a nice thing to have happen when you are trying to work. Still, it's better than having plumbing problems...

(Someone, either the gods or the pixies, must have been reading this as I typed because as I went to click the Publish button, all the text went wonkey and I have had to retype everything.)

Here's hoping.

:-) I've learned to do a copy of my comment text prior to hitting that "publish" button - I can't tell you how many times this has saved me (or how many times, prior to this, I've lost all my text!!!)
There is a frustration to that not like any other....the complete and total loss of time...

Boy, do I identify with that love/hate relationship with computers and the net. I HATED computers, though I admitted they were useful, until I got this laptop, my blog, and a high-speed wireless connection, all within the past year. Now I love, at least, this computer. Further than that, I'm not prepared to go.

Case in point: when I went to post this, I discovered I was posting as "the," (how charming!) so had to go sign into the e-mail account associated with my blog, then click on "Use a different account" on this page, which led me to a page where I could set up an account with Blogger--etc, etc,. Fortunately, I'd saved what I'd typed, so didn't have to type it again. A short but merry dance round the blogo-bush.

Oh, dear, I know what you mean, Alan! At Hawk's Haven, it's the wretched internet connection that's always kicking out---small wonder, when we have to have cable for high-speed in AND a dedicated phone line for less-than-high-speed out. I could never have imagined such a contorted system. As for the plumbing...

Another fan of the Ender series! I read somewhere recently that there is a movie in the works of Ender's Game. I'm curious as to whether the complexities of the book can be captured in a movie.

Agreed that the Ender series is marvelous, as is the "discworld" of Terry Pratchett, which I learned about on this site.

A great antidote to too much politics and poultry poop (or is that redundant?).
