New Tools

We acquired some new tools today. Should make it possible to do some more interesting things with all the milk with which we are blessed, like making butter and ice cream. We have been looking for them for a couple of years now, but they are pricy. These came available from someone cleaning out their basement. The price was very good, and after a bit of a clean-up, they seem to be in excelent condition. Over the next couple of days we will put them to the test. Fingers crossed and spoons ready.

I'm so jealous! I've always wanted to try making our own butter. Now I'm on a quest... thanks for the inspiration!!

Hmm I can see the tool on the right is a butter churn of sorts. But what is the one on the left? I can see it has a crank to turn, but does it have paddles on the inside?

Shibaguyz, you can get churns and separators from Lehman's if you have the coin used ones are hard to find. It is easier to find churns than separators.

Daphne, the tool on the left is a cream separator. It takes the cream out of the milk. With whole, unhomogenized cows milk you can just let the cream rise to the top and skim it off, but with goat's milk, which is naturally homogenized, you have to use a separator to get the cream.

The separator works. Tried it on some cows milk today. The next step (maybe tomorrow) is to make butter.

Interesting. I knew that goat butter was hard to get because there wasn't a lot of cream in goat milk, but I didn't know you had to separate it.
