Politics come home to roost.

Politics seem to have seeped into our lives here at Roberts' Roost despite my best efforts to ignore them. Today it was made very clear by J and R just how pervasive this political season has been. It was a rainy, cold afternoon and the kids couldn't go out and work with their pony and goats or play on the swing or do any of the things outside they normally do. I couldn't either. So we worked on inside projects. While I was doing some research the kids were playing some kind of dino-war game led by R. The sound of play eventually faded to a background buzz as the topic I was reading about got more interesting. When I finally resurfaced 30 minutes later I found the room plastered with posters representing the two candidates for "Household Adviser". This person apparently plans out projects that need to be done around the house and farm to make things run more smoothly, look nicer, and be more fun. (I didn't know we needed such a person, but...) Along with the posters there was an announcement of times to hear the candidates speak, a debate, and encouragement to get out and vote.

The speeches took place after dinner and were followed by the debate. Campaigning included fliers, candy bribes, and general haranguing. Things stayed pretty positive and issue focused (unlike the presidential campaigns.) The debate was lively with both candidates making good points about how they could make life more efficient and fun here at the farm.

The evening ended with J being elected Household Adviser for the month of November. She will be followed by R and the position will be reviewed by the Benevolent Dictator and the Queen of Everything at the beginning of the New Year.

I was amazed by how much of the process the kids picked up. Pretty cool for a couple of farm kids.

ROFL...love the dictator and the queen! Here at our house the kids must call me the Supreme Empress of the Universe, then they all fall down laughing!!!

It is amazing how much our kids pick up on even when we don't think they are interested or paying attention...something to always remember!

They sound like a couple of crackerjacks, those two! What a great experience to come up with something so timely and inventive. And useful, I dare say. :)

This was a priceless story. And very reassuring that the longest campaign season in history can have such positive fallout.

But mainly.....I just laughed out loud.

That is awesome! It's great that you allowed them to follow through with their exploration of democracy in action. I can't wait to hear how this new household position changes the way your operation is running! ;-) LOL!

Excellent! sounds very similar to how B and I worked out the rules of dishwashing and the dishwasher...when I was in 8th grade!

Your children sound delightful! How clever they are and I especially like the candy bribes. If it was chocolate it would definitely have swayed me.
